"You Belong to the City" is a song by Glenn Frey, recorded exclusively for Miami Vice in 1985. It was later released on the album Miami Vice in 1985, and as a single that year. It appeared in the episode "The Prodigal Son", as well as the 1985 Pepsi commercial featuring James "Sonny" Crockett and Frey.

  • The song was recorded exclusively for Miami Vice by Frey after he guest starred in the episode "Smuggler's Blues" (which also heavily featured his song of the same name). It has only ever been released on the soundtrack album Miami Vice, although it was also issued as a single in 1985.
  • "You Belong to the City" was one of four singles released from the album Miami Vice -- the others being the "Miami Vice Theme" by Jan Hammer, "Own the Night" by Chaka Khan, and "Vice" by Grandmaster Melle Mel. All four songs were written specifically for the TV series.
  • "You Belong to the City" hit #2 on Billboard's Hot 100 the same week that Jan Hammer's "Miami Vice Theme" dropped out of the #1 spot. The two songs were included on the first Miami Vice soundtrack, which became the biggest-selling TV soundtrack of all-time, and its 11-week run at the top of the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart has not been matched by any TV soundtrack since.
  • The B-side on the single release was Glenn Frey's "Smuggler's Blues", which notably appeared in (and in fact inspired) the episode of the same name.
  • The saxophone on the song is played by Bill Bergman, whose song "Lavado" later appeared in the episode "By Hooker by Crook".
  • The rapper Jay-Z sampled the song for his 1998 hit "The City Is Mine".
  • The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 8 days before "The Prodigal Son" was aired. Glenn Frey continued to perform this song in his concerts with the Eagles. Glenn died in 2016.
