Tony Amato (1955-1984) was an international gun runner, with connections worldwide that helped certain agencies of the US Government to perform certain actions without "embarrassing ourselves", implying he supplied weapons for the Contras and other national interests.

DuPass

Amato worked with two former National Guard soldiers, Gentile and Ramone and stole from an armory ten shoulder-strapped Stinger missiles, and were looking to deal them to a Jamaican national named DuPass. But Amato was under surveillance by Metro-Dade Vice and the FBI (including bugging his house and recording his conversations) due to recent high-power machine gun sales as well as the theft of the Stingers, and Tubbs took DuPass' place in the deal. After all but Amato were killed, he was taken for arraignment when a group of government agents demanded his release (with a court order) due to him assisting the government.

Rita/Death

Amato's wife, Rita, was a loyal spouse, but Amato's bigger secret than his gun dealings was his relentless mental and physical abuse of Rita, going so far to demand her change her clothes for an outing and then pushing her into a pool, fully clothed, and also slapping her around for not being appreciative enough of his "gift", a pair of earrings. Rita was so despondent she enlisted a hitman to kill her husband (she tried leaving him legally, but Amato arranged for her lawyer's wife to be beaten and her daughter to be next if the lawyer didn't back off), but Crockett stopped her and let her know they would put her husband away and she would be safe from his abuse. But when Amato was released by government agents, Rita showed up in a cab, pulled a gun and shot him (presumably dead).
