The Smithereens are an American rock band whose song "Blood and Roses" appeared in the episode "Duty and Honor" of the series Miami Vice.
Career[]
The Smithereens were formed in New Jersey in 1980 with founding members Jim Babjak, Dennis Diken, Mike Mesaros (left the band in 2006, replaced by Severo Jornacion, then returned in 2016), and Pat DiNizio. Their sound was inspired by 1960s power rock, and they released seven studio albums between 1980-2007, but their song, "Blood and Roses", was used in the movies Dangerously Close and Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, and it became the song for which the band was best known as its video was played in heavy video rotation on MTV. They had two songs reach the Billboard Top 40 singles; 1989's "A Girl Like You" (#38) and 1992's "Too Much Passion", but their career was sidetracked in the early 1990s with the advent of grunge rock. They continue to tour and released their eighth album, 2011, appropriately in 2011. DiNizio passed away on December 12, 2017 from a long illness. Mesaros rejoined the band for some tour dates in 2016 then returned permanently in 2017.
