Robert Crais (born June 20, 1953) is an American mystery and detective writer, who wrote the episode "Payback" and co-wrote the episode "Borrasca" (under the pseudonym "Elvis Cole", with Vladislavo Stepankutza) for the show Miami Vice.

Career

Crais was born in Independence, Louisiana, near Baton Rouge. He moved to Hollywood and began a screenwriting career for such TV shows as Baretta, Quincy, M.E. (with Val Bisoglio, where Crais also served as story editor and executive consultant), Hill Street Blues, Cagney & Lacey, and The Equalizer before reducing his screenwriting in favor of novels, where his main characters, Elvis Cole (a name he took as a writing pseudonym on Miami Vice) and Joe Pike, took part in numerous mystery stories, including the novels The Monkey's Raincoat, Free Fall (based on the Rodney King case), Sunset Express (based on the O.J. Simpson case), Hostage (made into a movie with Bruce Willis), and many others.
