Richard Jay Belzer (born August 4, 1944) is an American comedian and actor, who appeared in the show Miami Vice as "Captain Hook", a pirate radio operator off the Florida coast, in the episode "Trust Fund Pirates".

Career

Belzer was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut. After high school graduation, he lost both parents before his 22nd birthday (his mother to cancer and his father to suicide), Belzer began a career in stand-up comedy, appearing at The Improv, Pips, and also worked with the Channel One team who satirized television, which led to Belzer's first film appearance in 1974's The Groove Tube (which included Chevy Chase of Saturday Night Live fame). Belzer would go on to be the warm-up comedian for SNL in its' 1975 opening season, and appear two times on the broadcast. He also appeared in the 10th anniversary episode of Sesame Street before returning to the movies in 1980's Fame. His other movie roles included Author, Author! (with Jaime Tirelli & Denny Dillon), Scarface (with Al Israel, Pepe Serna, and Carlos Cestros), The Wrong Guys (with Brion James), Fletch Lives (with Randall "Tex" Cobb & R. Lee Ermey), Dangerous Game (with Madonna, James Russo, and John Snyder), A Very Brady Sequel (with Gary Cole), Species II (with Mykelti Williamson, Michael Madsen, and Justin Lazard), and Polish Bar (with Meat Loaf).

His TV appearances include roles on Moonlighting (with Bruce Willis), ten episodes on The Flash, Nurses (with David Rasche), four episodes on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and Mad About You, then began a long career (covering nearly 400 episodes and nine different shows) as Detective John Munch, first on Homicide: Life On The Street (with Melissa Leo & Giancarlo Esposito), as well as The X-Files, Law & Order, The Beat, Law & Order: Trial By Jury (episode with Dennis Farina), Arrested Development (episode with Gary Cole), The Wire, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and his regular role in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit since 1999. Belzer appeared in music videos for Pat Benetar & Mike + The Mechanics, and a comedy video, Charlie Barnett's Terms of Enrollment (with Keith Gordon). Belzer was also involved in a lawsuit over an appearance he and then-WWE champion Hulk Hogan had prior to the first WrestleMania, where Belzer was placed in a wrestling hold by Hogan, causing Belzer to pass out. The suit was settled out of court.

Personal Life

Belzer has been married three times; to Gail Susan Ross from 1966 until their 1972 divorce, then to Dalia Danoch from 1976-1978, and has been married to Young Lady Chatterley star Harlee McBride since 1985. Belzer has no children, though he has a stepdaughter from his current marriage to McBride. Belzer is a testicular cancer survivor, since 1984. Henry Winkler (Fonzie from Happy Days) is Belzer's cousin.
