Career[]

Sharkey was born in Brooklyn, New York. At age 17, he became interested in acting while watching the play Hair and enrolled in the H. B. Studio in New York. He made his film debut in 1974's The Lords of Flatbush, followed by his TV debut in 1975's On The Rocks (with Jose Perez), other TV appearances include All In The Family, Barney Miller (with Gregory Sierra), The Streets of San Francisco, and The Equalizer before getting a recurring role in Crime Story (with Dennis Farina), before another recurring role as Sonny Steelgrave in Wiseguy. His final TV appearances were in Jake and the Fatman (episode with Frank Pesce) and Ray Bradbury Theater.

His movie appearances include Paradise Alley (with Kevin Conway), The Idolmaker, Love & Money (with Tony Sirico & Jacqueline Brookes), Wise Guys (with Capt. Lou Albano, Dan Hedaya, & Julie Bovasso), No Mercy (with Bruce McGill, Gary Basaraba, & Jeroen Krabbe), and his final film appearance in Cop and ½.

Personal Life[]

Sharkey battled a drug addiction which resulted in multiple car accidents, surgeries, cost him his first marriage to actress Rebecca Wood (which lasted from 1981-86), and his second marriage to Carole Graham (from 1988-92, which produced a daughter, Ceceila Bonnie Sharkey, born 1989), caused him to get arrested for possession in Canada, and around 1987 he contracted AIDS from his sharing of needles, but he was in denial of his condition, feeling his strain of HIV was not dangerous to anyone else, which resulted in a lawsuit filed by a former lover, Elena Monica (born 1966), for knowingly infecting her with the AIDS virus. Sharkey died from AIDS on June 11, 1993, at the age of 40.
