Paul Manfred Glaser (born March 25, 1943) is an American actor and director, who directed the episodes "Calderone's Return (Part II), "Smuggler's Blues", and "The Prodigal Son" for the series Miami Vice'.
Career[]
Glaser was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. While attending Tulane University, he was roommates with director Bruce Paltrow (1943-2002, father of actress Gwyneth Paltrow). In 1969 he made his acting debut on the TV soap opera Love Is A Many Splendored Thing, followed by TV appearances in Love of Life, Cannon, The Streets of San Francisco, The Waltons, Kojak, and The Rockford Files (with Joe Santos), after which he received his first starring role as David Starsky in the series Starsky & Hutch, with David Soul as his partner, Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson, and Antonio Fargas as their informant, Huggy-Bear, which ran for four seasons, and inspired a 2004 movie (with Ben Stiller playing Glaser's role). During his Starsky run, he made his directorial debut, directing four episodes. His other TV acting appearances include Third Watch (with Patti D'Arbanville, also directed three episodes), The Closer (with Kyra Sedgwick), Criminal Minds (also directed), The Mentalist (with Terry Kinney), and his most recent appearance, in the 2013-14 series Ray Donovan.
His movie career began with a role in 1971's Fiddler On The Roof, followed by appearances in Butterflies Are Free, Something's Gotta Give, and his most recent role in Lego: The Adventures of Clutch Powers. His director credits include episodes of Amazing Stories, The Agency, Robbery Homicide Division (episode with Bill Smitrovich), Judging Amy, and Las Vegas. He also co-wrote, produced and directed the movie Kazaam with basketball star Shaquille O'Neal.
Personal life[]
Glaser married his first wife Elizabeth in 1980. During the birth of their daughter, Ariel, in 1981, Elizabeth received blood transfusions tainted with the AIDS virus, though no one knew it until after the birth of their son, Jake (born 1984), when it was discovered that Elizabeth, Ariel and Jake all were HIV-positive. Ariel died in 1988 from AIDS at age 7, then Elizabeth succumbed to the same disease in 1994, but not before her & Glaser established the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, which Glaser was chairman of from just after Elizabeth's death until 2002. Glaser remarried in 1996, to Tracy Barone, until their divorce in 2007, they have one daughter, Zoe (born 1997).
