"Never Let Me Down Again" is a song by Depeche Mode, featured on the album Music for the Masses in 1987 and released as a single in August of that year. A remix of the song, known as the "Aggro Mix", appeared in the Miami Vice episode "Death and the Lady".

Notes[]

  • The use of a remix of "Never Let Me Down Again" makes it one of only four songs to appear in Miami Vice in something other than its standard album form -- the others being "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, the acoustic version of "Smuggler's Blues" by Glenn Frey, "Baba O'Riley" by The Who and "Gambler" by Madonna. While the use of alternate versions/mixes was decidedly rare in the series, the Miami Vice film features numerous songs that appear in alternate remixed form.
  • The "Aggro Mix" was only included on the CD and cassette versions of Music for the Masses, as a bonus track; on vinyl, it was only available as a B-side on the 12" version of the "Never Let Me Down Again" single. This practice of including bonus tracks on CD was common when they were first introduced in the 1980s, to entice consumers to purchase the new format instead of vinyl (and because CDs had a greater capacity).
  • The "Aggro Mix" used in the show is almost entirely different from the standard album version of the song, featuring very few vocals and a prominent techno arrangement not found in the original.
  • The 12" single also featured a third mix of "Never Let Me Down Again", called the "Split Mix". Running at over 9 minutes, it features the album cut of the song with an extended intro, with a techno section similar to the "Aggro Mix" appended at the end.
  • The final track on the 12" single was a non-album B-side called "Pleasure, Little Treasure", which also features in the same episode.
