Career[]

Rutherford formed The Mechanics as a side project while working with his band Genesis in 1985, and recruited vocalists Paul Carrack (formerly of Ace) and Paul Young, keyboardist Adrian Lee and drummer Peter Van Hooke along with Rutherford's bass/guitar. Their first album, Mike + The Mechanics was released in 1985, featuring their Top 10 singles"Silent Running" and "All I Need Is A Miracle" (along with "Par Avion" and "Hanging by a Thread"). Their second release, 1989's The Living Years (the third single released), provided the group's first #1 song in the title track (as well as "Nobody's Perfect"). The group would never crack the Billboard Top 40 again, and they released three more albums in the 1990s before Young's death in 2000 ended the original Mechanics. The band released one more album in 2004 as Mike + The Mechanics featuring Paul Carrack, but the group disbanded in 2007, only to reform in 2010 as a new version of the Mechanics with Rutherford and Anthony Drennan on bass/guitar, Andrew Roachford and Luke Juby on vocals/keyboards, Tim Howar on vocals, and Gary Wallis on drums. Their first album in seven years, The Road, was released in 2011, followed by a European tour. Six years later, in 2017, another album was released, Let Me Fly, with the same lineup as the 2011 album.
