David Rasche (born August 7, 1944) is an American actor, who appeared in the show Miami Vice as Surf, an American member of the KGB trying to catch the former Russian KGB agent Laura Gretsky (played by Natasha Detante) in the episode "Bushido".

Career[]

Rasche was born in St. Louis, Missouri, but relocated to Chicago, where he became a member of the Second City Chicago comedy team after John Belushi moved to Saturday Night Live. He has performed in the theater in the 1980s, appearing in the plays Edmond and Taming of the Shrew. He began his film career in the 1977 TV series The Andros Targets, followed by his movie debut in 1978's An Unmarried Woman. Some of his other movies include Just Tell Me What You Want, Honky Tonk Freeway, Cobra, Delirious (with Zach Grenier), Devine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, United 93, Flags of Our Fathers (with David Patrick Kelly, Jon Polito, and Ned Eisenberg), Burn After Reading (with Richard Jenkins), Crimes of the Past, Men In Black III, The Good House (with Paul Guilfoyle), and his most recent movie appearance, 2023's About My Father.

His TV career includes appearances on Ryan's Hope, and Kate & Allie before his first starring role in the Dirty Harry takeoff series Sledge Hammer!, that lasted from 1986-88 (and on which he made jokes about Vice), then had a recurring role in the series Nurses from 1992-94. Rasche then appeared in The West Wing (with John Kapelos) and Just Shoot Me! (with Laura San Giacomo) before landing another recurring role, on DAG for 5 episodes, then appeared in Robbery Homicide Division, All My Children, Sherri, Ugly Betty (with Tony Plana), Rubicon, six episodes of Bored to Death (with David Patrick Kelly), Veep (with Gary Cole), Impastor, Madam Secretary, Understudies (with Elizabeth Ashley), and his most recent TV appearance, in 31 episodes of Succession (with Eric Bogosian).

Rasche is married to Heather Lupton, who appeared in Sledge Hammer! as Mrs. Hammer, and they have 3 children.
