Dr. Chaney is a drug treatment specialist at the Miami drug treatment facility. After Dr. Theresa Lyons admits to her boyfriend, Metro-Dade Detective James "Sonny" Crockett she's addicted to drugs (mainly painkillers due to back surgery done four years previous, in 1983), Crockett takes her to the center to get Theresa cleaned up, but Dr. Chaney is concerned that Crockett's profession (where he works with drug dealers undercover) would do Theresa more harm than good, and does not want her to go through with a plan to bring Joey Wyatt a damning tape of deals he has done in exchange for getting Wyatt arrested, and when Theresa O.D.'s after getting a call from the Medical Board, she and Crockett decide it's best for Theresa to attend a specialized drug treatment center (for doctors) in Hartford, Connecticut.
