Carlos Cantero is a drug lord, put on trial in 1988 for his drug dealings and murder of informant Dexter Simms, and a DEA agent, witnessed by Keith Mollis. To protect Mollis from Cantero's hit squads, FBI Agents Daley and Bates assign Metro-Dade Detectives James "Sonny" Crockett and Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs to protect Mollis, as Cantero placed a $1 million bounty on Mollis, dead only. Cantero also had a mole in the FBI--Bates, through an intermediary, Felix Reyes, who got all information on Mollis' whereabouts from Bates. After Mollis (later revealed to be Joey Hardin, DEA Agent in a cover role) is shot by Bates, the real Mollis is brought in to testify, but Cantero managed to intimidate Mollis to the point he could not testify, and Cantero is released for lack of evidence, angering Crockett, who nearly attacked Cantero over a smirking remark he made about Simms earlier.
