Bobby Sykes is a professional boxer, looked upon as a star by many in the boxing community in Miami. Sykes grew up in Tallahassee and had a brother killed by the police, due to this he doesn't trust any cops. He met up with the trainer Moon after trying to steal a tape deck from Moon's truck, then Sykes began training under Moon's watchful eye, and progressed rapidly through numerous boxers, and was on the cusp of breaking into the national rankings, defeating WBC #3 contender Hector "Bazooka" Hidalgo by knockout. However, the gambler/promoter Oswaldo Guzman also took a liking to Sykes, wanted him as his centerpiece for his new satellite sports network (offered by Vice detectives James "Sonny" Crockett and Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs), and sent his goons out to buy his contract. Moon refused two offers of $50,000 and $75,000, and was killed by Guzman for that. Later, when Larry Zito took over training Sykes, George Sordoni offered a rent-free apartment and $1500/month, later $200,000. Zito countered with $250,000 and part of Guzman's gambling operation (which was the goal all along by Vice), and for this Zito was killed by Guzman, leaving Sykes with no trainer or manager. Later Guzman signed Sykes, planning to build him up and then take him down (which is how Guzman has been making money on his own fights), but is alerted by Crockett and Tubbs, who help Sykes break free from Guzman, and after the gambler's death, resumed his boxing career.
