"Battlin'" Barry Gay was a former boxer, who lost a hotly contested decision to Frank Bastone in 1979, after which he went to prison for an unspecified crime, where he met Jake Manning, and Manning made Gay his personal assistant in 1982. In 1989, when Manning got out of jail and wrote his book The Cell Within, Gay and Manning went out to find subjects for Manning's personal prison, including a prostitute, drug dealer, prisoner, Manning's prison psychiatrist, and Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, the policeman that busted Manning. Manning invites Tubbs to a dinner, which turned out to be a trap, and Gay knocked Tubbs out twice (once by tranquilizer dart and once by physical means) to prevent him from escaping, and watches Tubbs endure the hell that Manning says he went through in jail. Finally, Tubbs tried again, but he re-rigged Manning's personal electric chair to help him escape, when Manning demanded Gay throw the switch to kill Tubbs, the chair actually electrocuted Gay instead.
