Alexis Arguello (April 19, 1952 - July 1, 2009) was a Nicaraguan boxing champion and politician who made his acting debut as Pepe Moya, brother of Diego Moya in the episode "Milk Run" of the show Miami Vice.

Boxing Career

Arguello began his boxing career in 1968, but did not win his first championship until 1974. when he defeated Ruben Olivares by 13th round TKO for the WBC Featherweight Title, which he held until Arguello vacated the title in 1977 when he moved up to Super Featherweight, in 1978 he defeated Alfredo Escalera, also by TKO in the 13th round, for the WBC Super Featherweight Championship. Arguello again vacated his title and moved up to the Lightweight Division, when he defeated Jim Watt in 1981 for the WBC Lightweight Championship by decision, making him the sixth boxer to become a three-division champion. He lost his title in 1983, but in the 1980's he had memorable fights with Aaron Pryor, after a fight in 1983 he "retired", but returned to the ring until retiring for good in 1995.

Acting/Political Career

He also delved into acting, appearing in two movies. Arguello briefly fought with the Contras during the Nicaraguan Civil War, but left the jungles and later joined his former enemies and became vice-mayor of his hometown Managua in 2004, later elected mayor in 2008.

Death

Arguello died on July 1, 2009 in Managua, by a self-inflicted gunshot to the heart, though the authorities listed the death as suicide, the cause is still in dispute.
